Elsewhere on the Web – 4 April 2011

April 4, 2011

So I’m not writing enough to warrant one of these “elsewhere…” posts every week, so I’ll wait until I amass a few of them and batch them together.

Two notes on things to read elsewhere.  The first is that I’m going to do the Music Diary Project that others are participating in. “Semi-retired music journalist” Nick Southhall came up with the idea to spend a week cataloging the music they hear for a week and many others are joining in. I thought I’ll give it a shot too and will post the updates on Some Songs Considered (unless I change my mind and put them here). I’ll update back here at the end of the week.

I also sat down the other night and made a particular effort to listen to LCD Soundsystem’s “Someone Great” and “All My Friends” together. Even though I love these songs and put Sound of Silver on time to time, I often overlook the way these two play into each other. So I did what seemed like a logical move – I fused the two MP3s together (and reduced it to 10MB for Tumblr), posted it to SSC, and then made some notes. The one thing I glossed over in that post (because it was getting too long) was the specific way that James Murphy sings the “were’s safe / for a moment” line with a pause in between the main phrase and the prepositional addition. It’s almost like taking a breath after reaching this place of emotional safety, only to immediately remind himself that it’s fleeting. After thinking of it that way, that silence between these lines gets bigger and more devastating each listen.

I also, through a stroke of luck, got a ticket to the LCD Soundsystem finale at Madison Square Garden Saturday night. That’s for another post this afternoon.
